Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum | June 29, 2026
The recent identification of the sunken World War II-era submarine USS Herring (SS-233) by the U.S. Navy’s Naval History and Heritage Command highlights an important role the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum plays in preserving the legacy of America’s lost submariners and connecting with their families.

The USS Herring was lost off the Kurile Islands during its eighth and last war patrol during World War II with 83 crew members aboard. The U.S. Navy confirmed the sunken submarine’s location on June 1, 2026.
