  1. unfortunately starting in the early 90’s submarine maintenance was civilianized. Shore facilities were no longer manned by crew members on a two year shore rotation that gained valuable indepth experience of thier shipboard systems and equipment. This has resulted in a huge degradation of ship readiness.

  2. So true. When they took Sailors out of the repair side they lost the much-needed experience that would carry over to do inport and at sea repairs.

Never made any sense to me, Sailors waiting around for civilians to do work they could be getting done.

The No Kao Oi (Pearl Harbor shipyard) workers were great, it was the paperwork/top heavy bureaucracy that bogged the whole process to a standstill.

21 years on Submarines was an experience I would not trade for much. DBF
